Rocky Flats The residents of areas surrounding the former Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant are in danger. New homes are being developed in select areas around the Rocky Mountains, and these communities promise vast open spaces, an active outdoor lifestyle, and unbeatable views. Certain areas, however, might be risky to live in due to their proximity to the notorious Rocky Flats Plant.

The plant used to be a facility for developing nuclear weapons. It was in operation from the early 1950s until the early 1990s. It shut down when the FBI raided it in 1989. The US government did their best to disassemble and clean the contamination from 1995 to 2007. Still, some toxic and radioactive materials are still buried, while other hazardous and radioactive materials were sent to other states. It was impossible to remove everything. Because of this, critics and citizens of surrounding nearby areas like Arvada are questioning the overall safety of their environment.

About one-third of the land is still considered unsafe, so it has been under the jurisdiction of the Department of Energy since 2007. Housing development is being established in other areas. Candelas is an example of a development that is on the southern border of the Rocky Flats wildlife refuge. If you are planning to move or buy a home there, be sure to read about the possible risks of contamination in Candelas in this website.
